Pinot Noir from Domaine de Maltaverne

You may be familiar with Pouilly Fumé, a small village close to Sancerre on the other side of the river.

This week we discovered a new wine from the area around Pouilly Fumé – a Pinot Noir from Domaine de Maltaverne in Tracy sur Loire.

Cuvée des Garennes is sold in the Vin de France category as Pinot Noir is not permitted in the production of Pouilly fumé unlike in the appellation of Sancerre where Pinot Noir is permitted for the production of red wine.

It’s a lovely wine. Fresh and light with rather delightful strawberry fruit aromas and a touch of undergrowth that is classic to this grape variety grown in relatively cool climate conditions.

Nice acidity backs up the fruit and it seems very good value indeed at 7 euros a bottle (you can purchase in France online direct from the producer and if you have it delivered that will add on another couple of euros or so per bottle to the price).

We bought our bottle locally from the Le Van, a mobile wine bar/caviste that stops in our village on a Wednesday night. From them it cost 9 euros.
