We were invited to see how work is progressing at Domaine FL this morning. Beautifully situated in the heart of the Layon vineyards, this project is nearing the final phase and hopes to open for business in January 2016. The winery itself is impressive with a rather beautiful vaulted barrel cellar and a stunning roof terrace offering views for miles over the valley on both sides. The good news is that the domaine is hoping to launch a whole range of wine tourism activities covering everything from basic tastings, food and wine pairing lunches, picnics in the vineyards, cycle tours, hot air balloon rides and trips down the river. While this project may not be particularly ‘representative’ of your average producer here in the Loire, it’s a breath of fresh air to be consulted by a domaine that is looking to launch activities that fulfill a need and find them open and responsive to suggestions. There’s quite a lot of work to do before officially opening the doors next year but it looks very promising.

What’s going on in the Loire valley vineyards in May?
Growers have been under time pressure to tie down the vines that were left upright in many appellations in an attempt to avoid frost. Normally this is done by mid April but no chances were taken this year.
