  • Diversity in the Vouvray vineyards

Walking through the vineyards this weekend we came across this delightful sight. An ocean of Cosmos flowers bordering an organic vineyard.

10 years on and tasting fabulous @domainearnaudlam 10 years on and tasting fabulous @domainearnaudlambert

Lovely fruit, smoky notes and really delightful acidity. Supple tannins. Everything in balance.

Love the 14’s.

RIP @evelyne_de_pontbriand_closel Affectionately RIP @evelyne_de_pontbriand_closel

Affectionately known as ‘Pom Pom’ by us, she was an inspiring lady and one who took us and our business seriously. When we lived in Anjou we went to see her regularly and our guests loved her.

She will be missed by so many people. A determined lady who embraced wine tourism and took her domaine from strength to strength. A leader in the #Savennieres appellation and tireless supporter of Chenin Blanc here in the Loire and in South Africa.

Wonderful wines, wonderful woman. She had a wicked sense of humour too that tapped into our British dry sarcasm - a rare quality that was appreciated by us and many other English speakers.

One of a kind that will be sorely missed.

What's been going on in the Loire in September/Oct What's been going on in the Loire in September/October 2024?

It's been a busy couple of months with some highs and lows both personally and for the growers. The constants are great food on the table and fabulous bottles in the cellar, the comfort of good friends and the pleasures of working in a trade that ultimately gives pleasure to so many.

Catch up with what's been going on here in the Loire these past two months.

Who would have thought I’d manage to persuade on Who would have thought I’d manage to persuade one of Amboise’s top restaurants @les_arpents to let me bring in cans of wine to accompany our final dinner with @cannedwinecompany.

This lovely dinner was the finale of a whistle stop visit to see how @lionelgosseaume’s grapes go from vine to can.

Yes, it’s possible to put high quality wine in a can! Exactly the same quality that goes into a bottle. And tasted side by side - impossible to tell the difference.

This is the future. Sustainable, infinitely recyclable, smaller serves, lower carbon footprint, better for the environment. I could go on.

Credit goes to @lionelgosseaume for embracing the idea and to @cannedwinecompany for its total commitment to quality.

Thanks to everybody who came to see us including @eatsleep_winerepeat @brightonwines @skinandpulp @bebbrell @benfrankswine @endofthewine

Thanks also to @les_arpents for being open to the idea. A great end to a packed day.

Pictured here fillet and belly of Roi Rose pork with an onion jus, spaghetti squash and butternut purée. Absolutely perfect with the Gamay.

You can find the Gamay (and the Verdejo which is equally delicious) in @waitrose stores in the UK. Sadly they’re not available on the French market!

What do you notice about this bottle? That it’s What do you notice about this bottle?

That it’s red wine? Yes, what else ?

That it’s a Chinon from @la_noblaie ? Yes what else?

Err, it doesn’t have a capsule? Yes bang on!

For decades it’s been an obligation for producers to have the little tax stamp visible on the bottle (showing that the relevant duty has been paid). Typically it was integrated or stuck on to the capsules.

In the past these capsules were often made of lead, these days they’re normally plastic.

In 2019 the rules changed and it was no longer an obligation but a choice.

Bravo to @la_noblaie for taking the decision to ditch the capsules (most of which go straight into landfill).

What's been going on in the Loire in July & August What's been going on in the Loire in July & August 2024?

The weather finally settles as we countdown towards harvest.

Cider has been on our table this month and there's a new
new winery restaurant you should put on your list.

As always there are our favourite bottles and a few of our tastiest dinners. And there's mildew, the devil that has had growers pulling their hair out this season.
