During the morning Cathy introduces you to the wines of the Loire valley with a comprehensive tasting.  You’ll discover the main grape varieties and styles of wine produced as well as learn a few local secrets in the comfort of our beautiful 16th century tasting room.

After the tasting, we move to the garden for an aperitif before enjoying a relaxing 3 course lunch in our old barrel cellar.  Local dishes and specialities are served alongside seasonal salads and herbs from the garden, as well as a top quality cheeseboard from celebrated fromager Pascal Beillievaire, and a delicious dessert.

We then make our way down to our beautiful riverside village of Le Thoureil where we meet up with Alain Gillot who takes us out on his beautiful old ‘toue sablière’.  An intrepid traveller and experienced boatman, Alain has many stories to tell of life on the river both here and around the world. Day of Arrival

Cathy and Nigel will collect you from the station in Angers (the train that arrives at 09h24) or from your accommodation if you have travelled to Angers the day before.

Day One

We’ll come and pick you up after breakfast and drive you to le tasting room where you will spend the morning discovering ‘Loire Valley Varietals’. This guided tasting introduces you to the main grape varieties and styles of wine in the Loire valley.

After an aperitif in the garden we’ll move into the cellar for a 3 course candlelit lunch with wine.  Enjoy a selectton of dishes prepared using local seasonal ingredients, our own herbs and salads from the garden, and a superb cheeseboard sourced from Loire valley based fromager Pascal Beillevaire.

In the afternoon we’ll head off out into the vineyards and visit one of the many wineries that we work with.  The producers we visit are small and many are off the beaten track. The visit includes time spent in the vineyard where Nigel will explain all the important stages in the vine’s lifecycle, and there will be the opportunity to taste the wines and purchase at cellar door prices.

Day Two

You have a free morning to potter around the beautiful small city of Angers.  You might like to visit the Chateau d’Angers with it’s medieval tapestry or just sit and watch the world go by in one of the many pavement cafés.  We’ll collect you just after lunch and we’ll then head off to red wine country.  2 visits to wineries located in the appellations of Chinon, Bourgueil, St Nicolas de Bourgueil or Saumur Champigny where you’ll have the chance to buy wines at cellar door prices.

At the end of the day, we’ll drop you back off in Angers so you have time to freshen up before dinner.

Day Three

We’ll collect you from your hotel after breakfast and head off back into the vineyards.  In the morning we’ll have a lovely long walk around the vineyards of the Layon valley.  We’ll talk terroir and you’ll get a real feel for the landscape.  After working up an appetite for lunch we’ll stop off at one of the only vineyards restaurants in the Loire valley, La Table de la Bergerie.  Nestling in the middle of the vines, this tiny restaurant has an open kitchen and offers a lovely lunch menu accompanied by wines from the domaine.  After lunch we’ll visit another winery before returning you back to your accommodation or the station at the end of the day.

Day of Arrival

Hop on the TGV in Paris on the train that arrives in Angers at 09h24 and we’ll be there to meet you.  Take in the beautiful scenery as we drive along the riverside to our home and 16th century tasting room in the heart of the Anjou countryside.

We’ll spend the morning tasting a range of wines from all over the region.  6 different wines from 6 different appellations in the Loire together with lots of stories and anecdotes behind the personalities that make the wines and lots of information about the area.

Savour a homemade 3 course lunch with wine in our old barrel maturation cellar beneath the house.  Enjoy a selection of dishes creatively prepared using local ingredients sourced from our neighbouring potager, and herbs from our garden.

Spend the afternoon in the vineyard.  You’ll have the opportunity to taste wine and discuss vine growing and wine making directly with the producers.

At the end of the day we’ll drop you off at your Ecolodge, a beautiful cabin amongst the trees.  A delightful organic panier will be delivered to your cabin so you can unwind and enjoy dinner at your leisure accompanied of course by local wine from the region.

In the evening why not take advantage of the beautiful spa facilities at the Ecolodge de Loire.  You can indulge in a wood fired sauna and hot tub in the forest or book a massage.

Day Two

Start the day with a continental breakfast   Although your time with le tasting room is at an end, feel free to explore the beautiful village of Le Thoureil, walk in the woods, have a sauna or massage. Enjoy the gentle pace of life in this quaint hamlet. The owners of the Ecolodge will order you a taxi back to Angers at your leisure so do take the time to either cycle around the countryside or take some time to discover Angers, a small but delightful city with lots to offer.

After the tasting, we move to the garden for an aperitif before enjoying a relaxing 3 course lunch in our old barrel cellar.  Local dishes and specialities are served alongside seasonal salads and herbs from the garden, as well as a top quality cheeseboard and a delicious dessert.

After lunch we make our way down to our beautiful riverside village of Le Thoureil where we meet up with Alain Gillot who takes us out on his beautiful old ‘toue sablière’.  An intrepid traveller and experienced boatman, Alain has many stories to tell of life on the river both here and around the world. A local man, he has a wealth of knowledge and can tell you all about life on the river during centuries gone by.

We require a 210€ non-refundable payment upon booking for wine tours. Bookings made within 48 hours of the tour date will be subject to payment in full at the time of booking.  Any tour cancelled within 48 hours of the tour date will be subject to full payment.  Any cancellations on our part will be fully refunded.
