Well, the risk of frost is over for this year and at last the vines are beginning to push. Things are looking greener now and the next stage will be flowering in a few weeks.
Typically flowering has been at the beginning of June in recent years when the weather has been warmer but this year, it’s been cool and windy and things have moved at a slower pace.
Catching up with Arnuad Herivault last week he estimated flowering will begin the third week in June. Based upon that, it looks like we won’t be in for an early harvest this year (but watch this space, anything can happen right up to the last moment as you well know).
Growers have for the most part treated twice for fungal diseases. The persistent windy weather has been useful in controlling that but the endless rainy days earlier in the season made it necessary.
Nathalie Leduc in Anjou said that they’d had 300mm since the beginning of the year.
The tomatoes are going in today. We hold off until the finer weather sets in and finally, it seems like we’re in for a sunny warm week with no rain forecast (at the moment). Temperatures are set to be in the mid 20’s, agreeably warm for our tours coming up this week.
