It’s a long while since we tasted one of Michel Chevré’s wines. The last time we saw him in person was at a tasting in Saumur when he was accompanied by his son (not yet a teenager!). Things have changed, his son Thibaud has grown up and now is taking joint responsibility with his Dad.
At that time he was still working for Thierry Germain and had just one parcel.
Clos de l’Ecotard was created by Michel Chevré in 2011 when he was chef de culture for Domaine des Roches Neuves. Encouraged by Thierry, he created his own domaine. The Clos is a south facing 3 hectare parcel of Chenin Blanc on limestone soil.
Today he has 7 hectares planted with Chenin Blanc, Grolleau Gris and Cabernet Franc farmed organically.

I’m happy to say that we were just as impressed with the wine as we were years ago. It has a lovely fresh floral character on the nose and delicious agrume notes on the palate. 2018 was a warm and sunny vintage which is reflected in the wine. It’s full and rich but also has tension and freshness. Delightful.
It was fermented in a mixture of 228 and 400L oak barrels and aged for 12 months on the fine lees.
