Slightly off the beaten track and away from the centre, Le Pois Gourmand is a locals’ restaurant just down the road from the Lycée Joachim du Bellay in Angers. It’s a quirky restaurant with around 25 covers and a perfect place for lunch. The menu is very limited and all the better for that. A choice of 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 or 3 desserts is standard and costs 18€. On this occasion I had a lightly chilled cauliflower soup with a smoked haddock mousse and shavings of smoked haddock followed by haddock served on a bed of seasonal vegetables. The fish rillettes served on shredded raw beetroot salad with mustard seeds and dill was extremely good too. Dessert on this occasion was a locally produced fresh cheese (fromage blanc caillé) served with rich chestnut honey.
There’s a large range of wines with a focus on natural producers and around a dozen available by the glass.
Another big plus is that it’s open on a Monday.
