Wines for Thanksgiving – whites

What white wines go with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner?

Turkey is often the traditional choice when it comes to your Thanksgiving dinner and here in the Loire we often opt for a white wine with poultry rather than a red.

You’ll probably want to have both on the table. So which ones would be a good choice? Well, if you have both sweet and savoury sides alongside your turkey then it might be a good idea to opt for something with just a teensy bit of residual sugar on the palate.

A Chenin from Vouvray would actually be a great choice (but of course I would say that wouldn’t I lol). It’s true – if you have sweet potatos and marshmallows on the plate, or any kind of sweet jelly, cranberry sauce, that touch of residual sugar is perfect for you!

Other ideas that would go well would be a lightly oaked Chardonnay from Burgundy or a Pinot Gris from New Zealand or Australia.

The wine in my picture is a Vouvray from an organic estate called Vigneau-Chevreau and this particular one comes from the walled vineyard that was first planted in 372 by St Martin at the famous Abbey of Marmoutier just outside Tours.
