A couple of weeks ago we spent the afternoon with local winemaker friends. Everyone brought along an interesting bottle to share but we were all completely outclassed by the amazing magnum of 1947 Vouvray that Julien Pinon kindly brought from his family cellar.

It’s the oldest Vouvray we’ve had the chance to try and it was a real treat.
It’s common knowledge that the sweeter Vouvray styles have an amazing capacity for ageing. This magnum was a demi-sec style and had retained beautiful freshness. Notes of caramelised orange and orange blossom with hints of black tea and nuts, it still had lovely balance and great length.
Julien is the 8th generation of the Pinon family to run the estate, considered one of the best in the Vouvray appellation.
