So, the Loire is off! They’ve started picking Chardonnay in Anjou, Saumur and Touraine. These grapes will be destined for sparkling wine (freshness being the key) so are often the first grapes to come in.
The weather has been fine and sunny with the odd shower in the past week. Nothing too much to concern growers who are anxious to make the most of the end of the season.
Yields are looking low but there is evidence of decent quality on those grapes not affected by mildew.
The ban de vendanges for the Vouvray appellation is the 23rd September but grapes are coming in here and there with special permission from the authorities.
I think it’s fair to say that growers will be happy to get this season over and done with and look towards a brighter year in 2022.

In the picture, Nico from Domaine Carême is moving barrels around. All the 400l fûts have to be removed from the cellar, jetwashed and replaced back in time for the 23rd!
