We spent the morning with Pierre-Jacques Druet in Bourgueil this week. He was half way through harvest and it was fascinating to see the way he produces his rosé by an ancient winemaking technique known as guillage.

The Loire is well known for its quality sparkling wines but how about this one from Chateau de Vaults, best known for its great Savennières. A non-dosage wine it’s dry and crisp and has great character.

21st May 2011 and the vines have burst into flower in Anjou, the earliest flowering since 1893 according to records which means we should be in for a very early harvest in the Loire valley.
