Technical vocabulary de-mystified – Floraison

So, we’re off again here in the Loire. We have floraison or flowering in the vines!

Vines are self-pollinating and so do not require insects for pollination (although they assist of course). Both the male and female reproductive organs are contained within the flower.

Ideally we want sunny days and a light breeze to ensure quick and even pollination. Rainy days can lead to uneven pollination and annoyingly we have had quite a bit of rain during the flowering period this year.

It looks like we are in for a spell of sunny weather for the next week or so which is good. Flowering in the Vouvray appellation has just started so hopefully conditions will be favourable.

Flowering in the grapevine

The scent of flowering vines is delectable. A delicate floral scent that is subtle yet heady.
