Salon des vins de Loire – tasting with Mathieu Cosme

day trips from Paris mathieu cosme vouvray

We were delighted to taste the wines of Mathieu Cosme at the Salon as he is based in our village and some of his vineyards are just a short stroll from our house in Noizay.

Mathieu has 10 hectares of vines perched along the limestone hillside just above the banks of the river Loire in the Vouvray appellation. His parcels have varying amounts of clay and flint on a limestone base and were certified organic in 2017 after 10 years of working towards full certification. No herbicides or synthetic products have been used on the estate since 2007 and the vineyards have been worked using a horse since that time too.

His winemaking history goes back 5 generations and after studying vine growing and wine making and a stint working at top Vouvray estate Domaine Huet, he took over the reigns of the family domaine in 2005. In 2008, Fabien Brutout joined him on a part time basis and became a full time partner in 2011. Together they produce a varied range of wines.

Mathieu Cosme Fine Bulles

Appellation Vouvray

A lovely appley freshness on the nose and palate with good depth and length. The mousse is gentle and comes from using the natural sugar present in the must together with naturally present yeasts. Aged for 12 months minimum sur lattes, a lovely sparkler. The vines are between 20 and 60 years old from a clay limestone soil with flint. 100% Chenin Blanc.

Les Promenades Vouvray Sec (dry) 2018

Appellation Vouvray

A lovely floral note on the nose and with a softness on the palate that is very appealing. The 2018’s seems rich and ample with lovely ripe fruit aromas. Nice and dry with good minerality but with a softness on the finish due to the vintage conditions this year. This wine comes from a clay limestone parcel that is colder than some of his other parcels. Clay soils are cooler and grapes tend to ripen later on clay soils. This parcel receives plenty of sunshine and so lovely maturity is achieved.

Les Promenades Vouvray Sec 2018

Less floral and open on the nose. Leaner and slightly higher acidity on the palate with more tension and texture than the 2018. Fermented in oak barrels using indigenous yeasts and then aged in stainless steel for a further 8 months. Notes of pink grapefruit and citrus as well as pear. 50 years old vines. 100% Chenin Blanc.

Les Enfers 2018 (13,5g residual sugar)

Appellation Vouvray

Lovely attractive soft fruit aromas. On the mid palate the acidity seems a bit low but it creeps back in on the finish and the 13,5g of residual sugar are nicely integrated into the wine. This would be great with something spicy with a kick of heat. Fermentation and ageing take places in 400L oak barrels using indigenous yeasts. The soil in this parcel is worked by horse.

We’re looking forward to supporting Mathieu and taking guests to see his vineyards this year.
