As the warm weather finally arrived we decided to head over east for a day in and around Amboise. Amboise is about half an hour from Tours (TGV station, airport) and is a lovely small town perched on the river Loire. A good place to base yourself for a short break if you’re looking for a smaller, quaint place. It’s noticeably more touristy in Amboise than around here in Anjou and that has its positives and negatives. On the plus side you’re more likely to find English spoken in restaurants and tourist attractions but on the minus side, it gets pretty busy.

Plenty of little boutiques, shops and patisseries

Come early on in the season in May/June or a bit later on in September/October and you’ll love it. It’s quaint cobbled streets, pavement cafés, restaurants and imposing chateau that looks over the river will keep you occupied for a long weekend. You’re also just a stones throw from good wines in the appellations of Montlouis sur Loire (on the south side) and Vouvray (on the north side).
