We try to source our food and wine locally wherever possible and it can’t get much more local than this.
The grapes that go into Mathieu Cosme’s sparkling Vouvray Fines Bulles come from a parcel of vines just up the road.
Mathieu’s winery is in our village and we often pass him out and about in the vineyards when we go for one of our regular walks around the Vouvray appellation.
Vouvray is well known for sparkling wine. Around 60% of total production is fabulous fizz and this year we’re likely to see the figure rise higher as the cool conditions have given us grapes that are relatively low in alcohol and high in acidity.
Mathieu’s wine is super crisp and fresh with hints of granny smith and pear, citrus on the palate and a very fine mousse. It makes the perfect aperitif.
His wines are exported to the US so you should be able to find them there and of course here in France or from the cellar door.
It’s important to support small local growers like this. They’ve had a tough couple of years and it looks like this coming vintage isn’t going to help much as there have been big losses to frost and mildew.
