If you are thinking of spending a little time in the Loire valley I can certainly recommend the small city of Angers.
We enjoyed a super lunch at Le Relais today. A traditional restaurant (in the nicest way), we loved the food, the service was efficient and discreet, the maitre d welcoming, the wines served at the right temperature.
It's close to the station so an ideal spot if you have just come in from Paris for a couple of days.
We had a velouté of celeri with smoked haddock to start with and then I followed with a very rich venison casserole served with red cabbage and apple. Nigel had piece de boeuf served with a pesto sauce, green salad and smashed new potatoes. It had bags of flavour and was cooked perfectly (saignant). We enjoyed a glass of Crémant to start with and then shared a half bottle of Anjou Rouge from Ledouc Frouhin which had good fruit and stood up well to the strong red meat flavours. With a coffee a piece the bill came to just over 70€ which we felt was good value for money. |

The Loire valley is beautiful at any time of year and a relaxing day in the countryside can provide a nice change from the bustle of the city.

The 2011 harvest is now well underway. It's been a strange year weather wise with almost drought conditions in early Spring and a distinct lack of summer weather over the past two months. Persistent rain over the past month has meant that vignerons have had to take great care in the vineyard to avoid disease but producers are reporting that the grapes are of reasonable quality. In many appellations 2011 has been the earliest harvest for many years.
Although growers are very busy, most are still happy to receive visitors during harvest.
