A rare treat to go off-piste and enjoy a bottle of Visellio Primitivo Salento 2010 last week. Primitivo is the grape variety (known in the US as Zinfandel) and in this case comes from Salento – the heel of Italy. Big flavours of plums and cherries with a smokiness backed up by rich yet soft tannins, it was just perfect served alongside a chilli con carne. The heat and spice in the dish were an excellent match to the rich fruity notes in the wine and as the tannins were soft there was no clash going with the chilli. Lovely!

Château de Bois Brinçon
We caught up with Xavier and Geraldine Cailleau at the Levée de la Loire a few weeks ago and tasted through their interesting range of wines. It’s always nice to have what I describe as ‘off-beat’ wines and Bois Brinçon has several little gems that are particularly interesting to the wine enthusiast.25 Feb, 2017

Vouvray – an update from Bernard Fouquet
We were there to catch up with Bernard Fouquet of Domaine des Aubuissieres, one of the top growers in the region and whose wines we regularly include in our tutored Loire wine tastings here at le tasting room. Bernard estimates that he has lost the equivalent of 60,000 bottles this year due to the hailstorm of June 17th 2013.17 Jan, 2014
Domaine FL’s new winery in Rochfort-sur-Loire
Domaine FL was founded in 2007 by Philip Fournier, entrepreneur, who having made his fortune in telecommunications, decided to venture into the world of wine. After an unsuccessful alliance with Jo Pithon (who now makes a range of great wines with his step-son Joseph under Pithon-Paillé) he is now aided by his son Julien, Stéphane Derenoncourt (wine consultant) and Hugues Daubercles (cellar master).16 Jan, 2014
Un oeuf is enough!
Ageing a wine in a concrete egg allows gentle micro-oxygenation (like when using oak barrels), without the addition of any complicating aromas and flavours that come about with wood contact. So, arguably the resulting wine is a more pure expression.9 Jan, 2014
