Jean-François Mérieau – Touraine

The Mérieau family has been making wine since 1886 and is now in the hands of Jean-François Mérieau. 38 hectares on flinty clay and limestone among the hillsides and the left bank of the Cher river give a diverse range of wines from a whole host of grape varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Malbec, Gamay, Cabernet Franc, Menu Pineau and Pinot Noir.

We love the contemporary labeling and sleek bottles. The labels are designed by Madlen Herrström, a Swedish artist who trained in France and splits her time between Paris and Vejbystrand.  The bottles are unique too, the neck being wider at the top enabling the cork to slip out easily and be reused as a stopper.

Coeur de Roche

Coeur de Roche – delicious complex Sauvignon Blanc

The wines are great too – one of our favourites is Coeur de Roche, a Sauvignon made from 50 year old vines.  It has fabulous minerality and a really tropical aroma with notes of citrus, white flowers and lemon balm.  It’s a completely different style of Sauvignon, richer and more complex, and we absolutely love it.

Slimline neck with cork

The neck of the bottle narrows from top to bottom

Cork that can be used as a stopper

As the cork is compressed it becomes naturally narrow at the bottom so slips back into the bottle easily

The family also runs a ‘Maison d’hôtes’ with 2 spacious suites and a gite that can accommodate up to 10 people so if you’re looking a spend some time in the region do check them out.
